What Is Social Responsibility and How Does It Relate to Transportation?

You’ve likely read about electric commercial vehicles, increased development in renewable natural gas and money available to support fleet transitions to alternative fuel. But, have you paused to consider why?  We have. Through extensive research, we found one of the biggest drivers molding the future of commercial transportation — social responsibility.

With a focus on emission reductions, social responsibility is becoming a top priority for consumers and corporations alike. In fact, 68% of American consumers feel companies should improve the environment with air pollution being one of their top concerns.  As a result, leading corporations across industries are listening and reacting by placing a strategic focus on sustainability. In 2018, nearly 86% S&P 500 Index® companies published sustainability or corporate responsibility reports compared to only 20% in 2013.

Because social responsibility plays a big role in our society, the emergence of B Corporations also continues to grow, totaling over 2,500 companies across industries and the world. Why? B Corporations businesses meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Distinguishing yourself as a B Corporation shows you care, which makes people more likely to buy from and invest in your company.

But, what does social responsibility have to do with transportation?

Across the country, countless communities are faced with the challenge of poor air quality. Although pockets of improvement are evident, air quality, especially on the west coast has worsened. This coupled with the fact that 4 in 10 Americans live in areas of unhealthy air (7 million more people than last year) magnifies the severity of this issue. And, unfortunately – transportation is largely to blame as the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions for the third year in a row.

The good news? Transportation emissions and the push for stronger social responsibility strategies is an opportunity for fleets across America. Your fleet can drive emission reductions for areas that need it most. But – how do you start? Who do you get involved throughout your organization? How much will it cost?

We can help. As a leader in development and distribution of the cleanest fuel solutions, we’ll work with you to develop a roadmap for success.
